Why the BTL Table Is Different to Standard Spinal Decompression

Not all decompression is the same.

Here's what makes the BTL system and Spectrum different from the standard traction or decompression you may have encountered elsewhere.

Standard traction applies a constant static pull.

It often triggers protective muscle spasm, which limits how effectively the force reaches the disc, and can leave patients no better off than when they started.

The BTL automated table uses sophisticated logarithmic force curves, pulling and partially releasing in precise, controlled cycles specifically designed to avoid triggering that muscle spasm response.

The force reaches the disc. That's the difference

What this means for you:

  • Negative pressure is created inside the disc, drawing herniated or bulging material back toward the centre

  • Promotes disc rehydration and restoration of disc height over a course of treatment

  • Calibrated to your specific body weight and diagnosis, not a generic setting

  • Backed by published MRI outcome studies showing measurable structural change

  • Used by patients across Sydney who found traction, physio and chiro had plateaued

There are very few clinics in Australia with this system. Spectrum is one of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are always here to help, if you have any further questions.

Is spinal decompression actually suitable for my condition?

The honest answer is: it depends on your specific diagnosis, which is exactly why we assess before we treat. Spinal decompression works particularly well for disc bulges, disc herniations, sciatica, chronic lower back pain and cases where conservative care has plateaued. The best way to find out if it's right for you is to take our 60-second assessment above, one of our practitioners will review your answers and let you know where you stand before you commit to anything.

How is this different from the physio and chiro I've already tried?

Physio and chiropractic care are excellent for movement, alignment and hands-on soft tissue work, but they can't change the internal pressure inside a compressed disc. Spinal decompression uses computer-controlled traction to create negative pressure inside the disc, which can draw herniated material back toward the centre and promote disc rehydration. It works on the structure that's causing the problem, not just the symptoms around it. At Spectrum, decompression is used alongside our existing physio and chiro care, not instead of it.

I've had injections and they didn't work long-term. Why would this be different?

Cortisone and other injections reduce inflammation, and they can provide real short-term relief. But they don't address the mechanical compression on the disc or nerve. Once the anti-inflammatory effect wears off, if the underlying structural problem is still there, the pain returns. Spinal decompression is designed to address that structural component, reducing the actual pressure and giving the disc an environment where it can begin to heal. Many of our patients come to us specifically after injections haven't held, and for the right diagnosis it can produce more durable results.

Is spinal decompression safe?

Yes, spinal decompression is a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment with an excellent safety record. The BTL table we use is a purpose-built medical device, not repurposed traction equipment, and it's backed by published MRI outcome studies. Like any clinical treatment, it's not suitable for everyone, we won't treat patients with acute spinal fractures, severe osteoporosis, certain spinal hardware or during pregnancy. That's exactly why we conduct a thorough assessment before any treatment begins.

Does it hurt?

Most patients are genuinely surprised by how comfortable it is. The sensation during a session is one of gentle, rhythmic stretching, many people find it relaxing and some fall asleep on the table. A session lasts 10–15 minutes. If at any point you feel sharp or unfamiliar pain, you tell us immediately and we adjust. That has not been a common experience in our clinic, but we want you to know the option is always there.

How quickly will I notice results?

It varies. Some patients notice a reduction in leg tingling or sharp nerve pain after just one or two sessions, the nerve decompression effect can be quite immediate in some cases. For others, meaningful improvement builds gradually over the first two to four weeks. We look for measurable progress within the first six sessions before committing to a full program. If we're not seeing movement in the right direction, we reassess, we won't keep you on a treatment that isn't working.

How many sessions will I need and what does it cost?

A typical course of spinal decompression consists of 15–20 sessions delivered over 4–6 weeks, usually starting at 3–5 sessions per week and tapering as you improve. The exact number depends on your diagnosis, severity and how you respond. Regarding cost, the best way to get accurate pricing is to speak with our team directly, as it depends on the treatment plan recommended for your specific situation. Many private health fund extras policies (chiro and physio cover) include a partial rebate, and WorkCover, DVA and some NDIS participants are also eligible. We'll walk you through your options at your consult.

Do I need an MRI before I can start?

An MRI is strongly recommended before beginning spinal decompression, not because it's a strict requirement, but because it gives us the clearest picture of what's actually happening inside your disc and spine. It helps us confirm you're a good candidate, rule out contraindications and design the most targeted treatment plan for your specific diagnosis. If you don't have recent imaging, our team can advise you on the fastest and most affordable way to get it in Sydney.

Isn't this just traction? I've tried traction before.

This is one of the most common questions we get, and it's a fair one. Traditional traction applies a static, constant pull to the spine. The BTL automated decompression table works completely differently: it uses sophisticated logarithmic force curves, pulling and partially releasing in precise, controlled cycles. This specific pattern is designed to avoid triggering the protective muscle spasm that basic traction causes, which is what limits traction's effectiveness. It's the difference between a hammer and a scalpel. Many patients who found traction unhelpful have had very different results with computerised decompression.

What if it doesn't work for me?

We understand this concern , you've probably been disappointed by treatments before. A few things to know: First, we assess you thoroughly before we start, so we're not recommending treatment we don't think is appropriate. Second, we set clear review milestones, after six sessions we reassess, so you're never locked into a course that isn't producing results. Third, if decompression isn't the right fit after a genuine trial, we'll be honest with you about what we think the next step should be. We're a multidisciplinary clinic, if decompression isn't your answer, we have other tools, and we're connected to the wider Sydney specialist network if surgical review becomes appropriate.

Will the results last?

Results are often very durable, particularly when decompression is combined with a targeted exercise program to stabilise and strengthen the muscles supporting your spine. At Spectrum, we integrate decompression with our exercise physiology program specifically because passive treatment alone tends to have less lasting benefit. Think of decompression as the treatment that creates the healing environment, and exercise as what locks those gains in for the long term.

Why choose Spectrum Healthcare over other clinics offering decompression?

A few things genuinely set us apart. We use the BTL automated spinal decompression table, one of the most advanced systems available in Australia, and one of very few clinics in the country that has it. Our team includes chiropractors, physiotherapists and exercise physiologists all under one roof, so your decompression treatment is part of a coordinated plan, not an isolated session. We assess before we treat, every single time. And we offer a free 15-minute discovery call before you commit to anything, because we believe the right treatment starts with the right conversation. If you'd like to read the published clinical studies behind our approach, we can send those to you on request.

Does this sound like you?

  • "You've done the physio. You've seen the chiropractor. You've had the injections. And every time, within a few weeks, the pain is back, sometimes worse. You're not lazy, you're not imagining it. You're just exhausted from managing pain instead of fixing it

  • Your GP or specialist has mentioned surgery. And even though the thought terrifies you, the downtime, the risk, being put under, you're starting to wonder if it's your only way out. What you really want is one more legitimate option before you have to make that decision."

  • You've started saying no to things. Sport. Travel. Picking up your kids or grandkids. Getting through a full work day without shifting in your chair. Sleeping through the night. Your back is running your life, and you're done with it."

You're not out of options. And you don't have to keep guessing.
